Tau Law can offer cutting-edge chip performance even on 7nm: Huawei

And here comes another bold statement on the Huawei Tau Scaling Law chip technology – it promises to provide high-end performance even on mature nodes like the 7nm process. This is said by the company’s Rotating Chairman Xu Zhijun.

Huawei executive has been a part of an interview with the Chinese chip tech outlet – Jiwei. During the talks, Xu mentioned that Huawei Tau Scaling Law can deliver “cutting-edge chip performance” on mature nodes like the 7nm process technology.

The chief believes that such an approach will not only boost the operational fluency of a chipset but also lead to cost-effectiveness over many of the new fabrication nodes.

Xu Zhijun says:

“If companies follow He’s Law, they can make chips based on 7nm technology at lower cost, why wouldn’t they?”

Further, Xu said that Tau Law doesn’t mean to replace Moore’s Law but aims to focus on decreasing the time constant around device, circuit, chipset, and system levels.

Moore’s Law has been a decades-old chipmaking method that’s still in action to date. But its future consequences pushed Huawei to adopt a new idea ‘Tau Scaling Law’ that doesn’t rely solely on transistor shrinking. Xu, in another interview, said:

“When Gordon Moore proposed his law, he didn’t convince everyone to follow him either. If He’s Law truly has vitality, it will develop naturally without persuasion. We are simply providing a path we have already verified.”

Based on the Tau Scaling Law, Huawei will use LogicFolding to make its 2026 Kirin chip. Instead of stacking (putting two separate sheets on top of each other), it will probably fold up layers in the chipset manufacturing.
